Managing hereditary cancer risk requires more than a referral to genetics — it demands a clinical framework for the longitudinal, multidisciplinary care of women who carry significant inherited risk across their reproductive lifespan. In this session, Dr. Michelle Jacobson draws on her expertise in directing one of Canada's foremost hereditary cancer clinics to deliver a practical, evidence-based review of hereditary cancer risk management for clinicians. She will cover risk stratification across BRCA1/2 and other high-penetrance variants, the evidence for risk-reducing surgery and chemoprevention, surveillance strategies, and the often-complex intersection of menopause management and oncologic safety in this population. A session that translates guideline-level expertise into actionable clinical decision-making for providers managing women at elevated hereditary cancer risk.
Michelle Jacobson, MD, FRCSC, is an OB-GYN and menopause specialist at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, where she serves as Co-Director of the Familial Ovarian Cancer Clinic — one of Canada's leading programs for the clinical management of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. An Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Jacobson holds a Master of Health Science in translational research, which anchors her clinical and research focus on menopause management in BRCA mutation carriers and risk-reducing strategies for women with hereditary cancer risk. She is the lead author of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) clinical guidelines on menopause management for individuals with breast cancer and hereditary cancer risk, and has co-authored national clinical practice guidelines on gynecologic management of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome and risk-reducing surgery for BRCA1/2 carriers. She is a board member of both the Canadian Menopause Society and the Menopause Foundation of Canada, and co-founder of Coven Women's Health, a virtual clinic specializing in perimenopause and menopause care.
