Thyroid disorders are among the most common endocrine conditions encountered in women's health practice — yet the nuances of postpartum thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and Graves' disease are frequently misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or undertreated in the clinical setting. In this session, Dr. Abid Yaqub delivers an evidence-based update on all three conditions, clarifying the distinct pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic approach for each, while addressing the management considerations most relevant to women across the reproductive lifespan — including monitoring during pregnancy, postpartum, and in the context of autoimmune overlap—a clinically essential update for any provider who encounters thyroid disease in their women's health practice.
Abid Yaqub, MD, FACP, FACE, FCPS, is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Endocrinology practice at UC Health Physicians Office South in West Chester, Ohio. Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, Dr. Yaqub also holds endocrine certification in neck ultrasound (ECNU) from the American College of Endocrinology and is a certified clinical densitometrist (CCD). He is an NRC-authorized user of RAI-131 for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Prior to joining UC, he served as Program Director of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. His clinical expertise includes thyroid disorders across the full spectrum — including autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroid cancer, and postpartum thyroiditis — as well as metabolic bone disease and parathyroid disorders.
